Last month we announced the arrival of expanded sheet, and now we’ve got an even larger selection! In addition to our materials in standard expanded sheet, we now offer flattened expanded sheet.

Flattened expanded sheet is made by running standard expanded sheet in a cold roll press until it is completely flat. It’s pretty simple.

The process results in a thinner gauged sheet with no ridges. Our flattened expanded sheet is available in the same alloys as our standard expanded Sheet: Aluminum, Hot Roll and Stainless Steel.

Each alloy is available in a wide range of gauges (thickness) and opening width (narrow length of the diamond).

Expanded sheet is known to be as strong or even superior in strength to its parent material. However, the angled plane of the sheet gives it a rough and bumpy appearance and texture. This can be a benefit if the material is used for grating or light filtering. However, if you want a smooth surface finish with no risk of abrasion, then flattened expanded sheet is the best choice.

Flattened expanded sheet applications

  • Ideal for uses where strong, lightweight and durable sheet is needed
  • Grating
  • Machine Guards
  • Fencing & security
  • Storage with ventilation
  • Architectural detailing

How’s it made?

Expanded sheet is a versatile and economical product that is utilized in almost every industry. It’s a form of metal stock made by shearing a metal plate in a press that stretches the metal. This leaves diamond-shaped voids surrounded by interlinked bars. It is a large part of the metal industry and plays a key role in metal fabrication.

Because it is made from a one piece construction, it won’t unravel. Also, under normal circumstances it will hold its shape for many years. The strands and bonds of the diamond-shaped trusses add strength and rigidity. Lastly, the sheet is also lightweight and easy to fabricate and form.
